Movie Ratings with Kids in Mind

Movie Ratings with Kids in Mind
August 27, 2010 jflojennings

Merrimack Valley Moms, what are you up to this weekend?  If you’re catching a movie with the kids, here’s a site where they break down the movie beyond its rating.

They ‘review’ the movies in three categories:  Sex/Nudity, Violence, Profanity.  The end of each piece provides talking points and themes.

Even non-parents are visiting the site.  It’s gathered a cult following because of how specific the reviews get in assessing the criteria, above.  Search for a horror movie, for instance, and read through the Violence category.

Ho do you monitor what your kids watch?

I have a question for all of you “veteran” mothers out there. What age did you start bringing your child to the movies? I can honestly say that I have not been to a movie theater since I got pregnant with my daughter back in 2008. First I was pregnant and knew that sitting through a 2 hour movie would not be enjoyable and then I had a baby who is now almost 2 and I know she is not ready yet. I’m a “planner” and would love to know when I may be able to enter going to the movies back into my social calendar.

Showcase Cinemas has a G rated kid’s movie every Saturday and Sunday at Noon. It’s $3.50 a movie and you also get a deal on popcorn. It’s a Barbie movie this month and it changes monthly.

This would be a great way to introduce your daughter to the movies. The movie is so big and loud it almost always keeps children distracted. But know that even if she does not sit still that you are in the same boat as every other parent there. So relax and enjoy.
